About the author
Denise Athill is a storyteller, a pattern‑reader, and a woman shaped by both academic discipline and lived experience. She holds a Master’s in Psychology. Her work brings academic discipline and lived experience into conversation with clarity, timing, and becoming.
Professionally, Denise is a heart-led operations and finance leader with more than a decade of experience across major healthcare systems and higher‑education institutions. She has overseen multimillion‑dollar budgets, HR operations, compliance frameworks, internal controls, payroll systems, and cross‑functional teams. Her work has supported physicians, faculty, students, and executive leadership across some of the most complex environments.
Her background includes:
Organizational governance
Financial stewardship
HR operations
Compliance and internal control
Strategic planning
Cross‑functional leadership
But her writing? That comes from somewhere deeper.
Denise is known for her ability to see the pattern beneath the pattern — the thing behind the thing. Her mind moves in layers, symbols, emotional architecture, and psychological nuance. She writes in her own voice, her own dialect, and her own truth, without apology or dilution — speaking in her full volume, with her full sternum.
Her dog, Chicago, sits on her desk like a tiny security guard, grounding her through the writing process and witnessing every chapter as it unfolds.
What Happened After Wednesday is her debut book — a psychological, spiritual, and deeply human account of what happens when misunderstanding becomes a system, silence becomes a weapon, and a woman finally decides to speak in her full authority.
Denise is a well‑blended woman — academic and intuitive, structured and spiritual, analytical and emotional, professional and personal. She believes in honesty, discernment, rest, and telling the story exactly as it happened — even when it makes the room uncomfortable.
Because she didn’t get the “shorter end of the stick.” She got the truth — and she finally decided to tell it.

Why I started What Happened After Wednesday
I started blogging on What Happened after Wednesday because I needed a place where my truth could breathe in its full volume — not edited, not softened, not translated for people who never lived my experience. The blog became the space where I could finally speak in my own voice, in my own dialect, with my psychology background, my administrative lens, and my lived experience all blended together.
I write so readers can see the patterns behind their own workplace chaos, misunderstandings, and “you won’t believe this” moments. I want people to walk away with language for what they’ve lived through, clarity for what they couldn’t name, and the validation that they were never “too sensitive” — they were simply never understood.
My posts aren’t about venting. They’re about naming, unpacking, and making sense of the things we were taught to swallow. If readers gain anything, I hope it’s this:
You’re not imagining it. You’re not alone. And your story deserves to be told in your full voice.
Beyond writing, I’m passionate about advocating for people whose voices get lost inside systems that were built long before any of us arrived — systems that look modern on the surface but still operate on old patterns, old hierarchies, and old assumptions. I care deeply about helping people recognize those patterns, name them, and navigate them without losing themselves.
I’m also passionate about emotional intelligence, psychology, and understanding how people move, react, and communicate inside environments that don’t always make room for nuance. A lot of my work — professionally and personally — revolves around helping others find clarity where confusion has been normalized.
Outside of that, I love quiet reflective moments, reading, and anything that lets my mind breathe. I enjoy observing human behavior, studying organizational dynamics, and finding the story inside everyday interactions. And of course, spending time with my dog, Chicago, who has become the unofficial supervisor of my writing desk.
At my core, I’m passionate about people — how we grow, how we heal, how we differ, how we think, and why our differences in the workplace should be encouraged rather than criticized. I care deeply about the quiet ones — the voices that go unheard for too long — because when silence finally erupts into a single moment of overwhelm, that moment is too often judged more harshly than the years of composure that came before it, leaving people misunderstood, unprotected, and unable to reclaim the narrative that was taken from them.

Beyond the blog: my passions
I’m passionate about my ongoing work — my passion project — of examining and challenging the systems that have historically misread or marginalized people who move through the world differently. Outside of that, I love psychology, emotional intelligence, observing human behavior, and finding clarity in the quiet moments that help people reclaim their voice.
